Clen and Emma Atchley Honored as UI Foundation Volunteers of the Year

Clen and Emma AtchleyClen and Emma Atchley have been selected the Foundation’s Volunteers of the Year for their long-term leadership as volunteers for the University of Idaho. Their efforts to support UI through their time, and talents, epitomize the many valued opportunities that exist for alumni to give back to their alma mater.

Photo above: Clen and Emma Atchley admire the gold centennial medallion they received during Ag Days 2002 for their contribution to the college Centennial Scholarship Endowment fund.

The Atchley’s hail from Ashton, where they operate the Flying “A” Ranch, a seed potato farm. Both are UI alumni; Clen received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1966, and Emma earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1968 when she received the prestigious Theophilus Outstanding Senior Award.

Emma became a UI Foundation member in 1990. Ten years later, she was elected Foundation president. During her presidential term, the Foundation set out on its two most ambitious projects. The Foundation Board decided to embark on a $100 million fund-raising campaign, The Campaign for Idaho, and also undertook development of Idaho Place, a permanent home for UI’s programs in downtown Boise. Emma served on the Agricultural Biotechnology Campaign Committee from 1998 to 2001, helping raise nearly $6 million, double the original goal. Emma also has served as a UI Alumni Association board member and was board president in 1987.

Clen has served the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in a number of volunteer positions. He has been a member of the Ag Consulting Council, now known as the Dean’s Advisory Board, for a number of years. Clen also was a founding member of the

College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni and Friends Association Board of Directors, serving as board president in 1999 for a two-year term. As a member of the board, Clen has been a key member assisting the college in events and student recruitment activities in southeast Idaho. Clen was also appointed to the college’s Centennial Task Force, which met throughout 2000-2001 to plan college centennial activities on campus and around the state.

“Clen and Emma Atchley are outstanding volunteers and supporters for the UI and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences,” said college Dean Larry Branen. “That’s just their way, they give of their talents, time and financial support in ways too numerous to count.”
