Fire-Resistant Plants for Home Landscape.
An Idaho bestseller.
Gem state wildfires had burned a record 2 million acres as of mid-September- more then any other state in 2007.
So it's not surprising that a $3 Pacific Northwest Extension Publication (PNW
590) listing the most fire-resistant plants for home owners is among the year's
top sellers for the UI College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Titled Fire-Resistant Plants for Home Landscapes: Selecting
Plants that may reduce your risk from wildfire, the 46-page booklet lavishly
illustrated with full-color photography, sold more then a thousand copies in
Idaho in the past two years.
Fire-resistant groundcovers, perennials, shrubs, and trees are listed along with
zones where each grows best, final size and growth speed, bloom color, growing
requirements (sun or shade), and photos. Also useful is a site plan illustrating
one home surrounded by aesthetically pleasing fire-resistant plants.
The book, written by Oregon authors, says fire-resistant plants "do not readily
ignite from a flame or other ignition sources. These plants can be damaged or
even killed by the fire; however their foliage do not significantly contribute
to the fuel and, therefore, the fire's intensity."
