Cummings Center

A celebration at the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center became more festive in August with a surprise move by the Auen Foundation of Palm Desert, CA.

Cummings

Ron and Sherrie Auen and Catharine Reed, their daughter and the foundation’s program director, decided to transfer title of the 1,100-acre ranch to the University of Idaho this year ahead of schedule.

“We are grateful for your generosity,” UI President Tim White told Auen family members. The center honors the late Nancy M. Cummings, Sherrie Auen’s mother and a Salmon-area resident. She loved the valley and wanted to expand educational opportunities there.

A key goal in the foundation’s transfer agreement called on cattle producers to donate 100 cows, a task accomplished with Idaho Cattle Association help.
The center’s research now plays a key role in an animal identification system for livestock and efforts to improve beef quality through genetics.“I’m very pleased that they have confidence in us and they believe in us,” said CALS Dean John Hammel.  Learn more at http://www.ag.uidaho.edu/nancycummings/
