College of Agriculture Awards R.M. Wade Outstanding Teacher Award Carolyn Hovde Bohach, an associate professor of microbiology, was praised as an engaging, innovative, and highly organized teacher. Outstanding Academic Adviser Award Kathe A. Gabel, an associate professor of family and consumer sciences and director of the Coordinated Program of Dietetics, also advises student athletes and serves as the NCAA faculty liaison. Outstanding Staff Award Debra J. Rumford of the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences won the outstanding award for secretarial, clerical and management staff. Timothy P. Steffens of the Department of Micobiology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry, received the award for technical and professional staff. The award-winner for service and maintenance staff was David G. Casebolt of the Department of Animal and Veterinary Science. Outstanding Senior Award Jacque A. Church and Roger L. Wells tied for this award. Church, who is an animal and veterinary science major from Fruitland, served as president of the Agricultural Student Affairs Council and was a College of Agriculture commencement speaker. Wells is an agricultural and extension education major from Buhl. Capital Press Outstanding Junior in Agriculture Award Buck S. Samuel, a microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry major, is vice president of the Associated Students of the University of Idaho. He is a former intern with the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates program. Outstanding Sophomore Award Lindy A. Hill, an agricultural economics and rural sociology major from Baker City, Ore., is an Ag Ambassador and a member of the Agricultural Student Affairs Council, the AgBusiness Club, and Alpha Zeta. Capital Press Outstanding Freshman Award Ian Toevs, majoring in biological and agricultural engineering, earned a spot on the deans list for academic performance and is a volunteer math and science tutor for upperclassmen. Phil Berger, associate professor of plant pathology, received the Phi Kappa Phi Distinguished Faculty Award for 1999. Laurel Branen, associate professor, family and consumer sciences, won the Outstanding Faculty Award for 1999 at the Inter-Fraternity/Panhallenic Council Awards Banquet. Jim Connors, assistant professor in agricultural and extension education, was given both an Honorary State FFA Degree and an Honorary American FFA Degree. Janice Fletcher, associate professor, family and consumer sciences, was awarded the University of Idaho Excellence in Outreach Award, 1998-99. Gary Fornshell, extension educator of aquaculture in Twin Falls, received the Epsilon Sigma Phi State Mid-Career Award for Excellence as well as the Idaho Association of County Agents Achievement Award. Maynard Fosberg, professor emeritus of soil science, received the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) Outstanding Cooperation Award for providing exemplary service to agricultural education at the national level. Ken Hart, extension educator in Lewis County, received the Idaho Grain Producers Association Award for Excellence in Extension. Ivan Hopkins, associate professor emeritus and extension educator in Minidoka County, received the Governors Award for Excellence in Agriculture, Lifetime Achievement, at the Idaho Ag Summit 2000. His accomplishments over his 38 years of work include major roles in establishing the $100 million malting barley industry in the Magic Valley and maintaining a strong sugarbeet industry in southcentral Idaho. Don Morishita, extension associate professor of weed science, received the R.W. Schermerhorn Extension Faculty Award.
John Mundt, associate professor in agricultural and extension education, received the Outstanding Service Citation at the annual convention of the National Association of Agricultural Educators. Douglas Pals, professor in agricultural and extension education, received the Governors Award for Excellence in Agriculture at the Idaho Ag Summit 2000 in the area of Education/Advocacy. His extensive work on the Idaho Ag in the Classroom project over the past 12 years has reached over 2,500 elementary teachers. Vickie Parker-Clark, extension educator in Kootenai County, was the western regions Epsilon Sigma Phi 1999 Regional Distinguished Mid-Career Award Honoree. Donn Thill, professor of plant science, was selected to be a Fellow of the Weed Science Society of America at its annual conference in San Diego on February 7, 1999. David Wattenbarger, extension educator in Boundary County, received the Idaho Grain Producers Association Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the grain industry.
