1940s

Joseph Snyder '43, Calif., sold his manufacturing and marketing business in 1988. Before retiring, Joseph had a research career in the pulp and paper industry.

Dr. Mary (Dochios) Kamberos '46, Chicago, has a solo pediatrics practice and has served as head physician for a juvenile detention center for 35 years. She continues her private practice two days per week.

Betty (Brookbush) Lash '48, Salt Lake City, Utah, recently retired from a 49-year career as a medical technologist. Her daughter and two sons are now M.D.s.

1950s

Dr. Dennis and Darlene Mahlum '58, Richland, Wash., are enjoying retirement and planned a cruise through the Panama Canal in September. Dennis continues on the advisory committee for the Research Centers in Minority Institutions program at Florida A&M University.

Dr. Darrell Weber '58, M.S. '59 continues his research and teaching career at Brigham Young University. In 1998, Darrell visited Kenya, Israel, and Jordan and was two blocks away from the Nairobi, Kenya, blast that killed 249 people.

Denny Naylor '59, M.S. '61 retired from his position as professor of soil science at the UI on June 25. Denny and his wife, Koreen, have two children, both of whom attended the UI.

1960s

Dr. L. William Stillway M.S. '65, Ph.D '68 is a faculty member of the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston. A professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, recently he was asked to teach a web-based course for the University of Health Sciences on St. Kitts, a new medical school in the Caribbean.

Pamela Brahm '66, Seattle, is a research technologist at the Research Center in Oral Biology at the University of Washington. Her area of interest is oral anaerobic bacteria.

Jon L. Wells '67 was a recipient of the 1999 Idaho Coors Environmental Conservation Award. He and his wife, Carol, farm 650 acres near Castleford.

Dr. Richard M.S. '69 and Nona Kay (Shern) Barclay '64 have recently moved back to Coeur d'Alene. Dick is the director of toxicology at Pathology Associates Medical Laboratory, and Nona Kay works three days per week as a med tech at Spokane Oncology.

John De Moura Ph.D. '69, Moscow, recently retired as laboratory/lecture coordinator in the UI Department of Chemistry. He plans to remain in Moscow. His wife, Beverly, is a nurse for a plastic surgeon in Pullman.

1970s

Lois (Cook) Blackadar '71, Salmon, currently works at the Steele Memorial Hospital. Her position involves 24-hour coverage for the emergency department.

Dr. Frank Ph.D. '74 and Donna Parks continue to operate their family-owned business, Biotech Associates Ltd., Inc. They recently took time off to travel around the world with stops in Northern Ireland, Germany, and Hong Kong.

Susan (Catey) '75 and Leo Nickasch have recently moved to Neenah, Wis. Sue is working part-time in the registrar's office at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. Leo, a pharmacist, has retired from the Veterans Administration.

Dr. David Ph.D. '75 and Judy Springer live outside Pasco, Wash. Dave is a staff scientist in the Molecular Biosciences Department, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Judy manages the group that operates the mainframe computers for the Hanford Site.

Richard Jasman '77, Seattle, works for the ICOS Corporation in Bothell, Wash. A staff scientist, he manages the hybridoma facility.

Dr. Dana Shaltry '77, Port Angeles, Wash., continues work as an orthodontist. He recently visited campus to watch his niece, Angela Shaltry '99, graduate with a double major in MMBB.

Mark Shelton '77 served as a professor for 14 years at California Polytechnic State University. In 1997, he was promoted to associate dean for the College of Agriculture.

Steven Lieb '79, Moscow, has been employed by Washington State University for 18 years. He is a research associate in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine.

1980s

Maureen DeCresce '80 is administrator of the New York University Medical Center program for in vitro fertilization. Her marriage to Subhenu Ghosh was scheduled for August 1, 1999.

Dr. Steven Fairbrother '80, Bellevue, continues as partner of the Wood River Equine Hospital. He was recently elected mayor of Bellevue. He and his wife, Leslie '81, have one son.

Thomas Warnick '80 is a laboratory technician at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Tom and his fiancee recently purchased a house. Their wedding was set for July 1999.

Ming Wong '80, Corsicana, Tex., is vice president for fiscal services and CFO at Navarro Regional Hospital.

Dr. John Flory '81, Tumwater, Wash., continues as a partner in the Deschutes Animal Clinic. He is the senior large animal clinician.

Dr. John Mannschreck '82, Lewiston, is a member of the board of directors at Tri-State Memorial Hospital, Clarkston, Wash. He completed medical school and residency at the University of Washington and now practices radiology.

Louis Lunte '83, Arco, is the director of conservation programs for the Nature Conservancy in Idaho. He and his wife, Cindy, recently traveled to China to adopt 11-month-old daughter, Jenny Lianne Lunte.

Carol M. Stiff M.S. '83, Ph.D. '89, Moscow, is president and CEO of Kitchen Culture Kits, Inc. She has recently released an educational CD on home and classroom plant tissue culture. Find her on the Web at www.kitchenculturekit.com

Dr. Jerry Exon Ph.D. '84 was promoted to professor of food science and toxicology. He continues as head of the UI Department of Food Science and Toxicology and director of the Food Quality Assurance Program.

Ray Skowronski '84 , Myersville, Md., has taken a biology teaching position at Catoctin High School in Thurmont, Md.

Dr. Kalidas Shetty M.S. '86, Ph.D. '89 recently received tenure at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He recently traveled to Denmark, France, and Iceland to develop research collaborations. He and wife, Geetha, have two boys.

Dr. Joseph Cvancara '87, San Antonio, Tex., is a major in the U.S. Air Force. He is completing a dermatology residency at Brooke Army Medical Center. Upon completion, he will transfer to Travis Air Force Base, Sacramento, Calif.

Daniel Hamlin '87 continues as public health epidemiologist for the state of Massachusetts. He has been involved in investigations of clusters of diseases that pose the greatest threat to the public. His mother, Florence Roberts, recently retired from the UI Department of English.

Dr. Philip Kowash '87 is a family physician with a group practice in Saco, Maine. The Kowashes have two children and are expecting another.

Dr. Paula (Donnelly) Nellesen M.S. '88, Ph.D.'92 is a part-time biology instructor at the Albuquerque Technical-Vocational Institute. She and her husband, James, have two children.

Dr. Tina (Toennis) Busby '89 graduated from medical school in 1995 and practices part-time in a five-person private group. She also teaches as an assistant clinical professor at the University of South Florida. When her husband, Dean, completes his radiology residency, the Busbys will move to Duke University where he has a neuroradiology fellowship.

Dr. Suzanne Theim Ph.D. '89 recently traveled to Vancouver, BC, and Sapporo, Japan, for scientific meetings. She continues to do research at Michigan State University.

1990s

Keith W. Anderson '90, M.S. '95, Cheney, Wash., is the new agricultural instructor at Cheney High School. He previously taught six years at Snake River High School and two years at Raft River High School.

Dr. Harry Kurtz Ph.D. '90 has accepted a position as professor of microbiology at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Tex. He has an active research program, and will present some of his findings at the 1999 meetings of the American Society of Microbiology.

Qin Sun M.S. '90 is a programmer for Allstate Insurance headquarters. Her husband, Kai, Ph.D. engineering, works in Chicago.

Dr. Ji-Liang Zhao Ph.D. '91 is continuing his research on asthma at Harvard Medical School. He and Ran welcomed a second son into their family last December.

Dr. Forrest Bullock '94, Seattle, received his M.D. degree from the University of Utah in 1998. He is working on his residency in anesthesiology at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. His wife, Bobbie, recently completed a degree in nursing at UU.

Marc Cortese '94 is pursuing a Ph.D. degree in MMBB. He continues as a scientific aide in the Environmental Biotechnology Institute.

Tonia (Gilbert) Green '94 returned to campus in August 1998 to take a part-time position in Dr. Ron Crawford's lab. Prior to that, she worked as a laboratory technician for three years.

James Harrington '94 has accepted a position as a microbiologist with Sheperd Miller, an environmental and engineering consulting firm based in Fort Collins, Colo. He completed his M.S. degree in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Timberly Roane M.S. '94 recently presented a UI departmental seminar, "The Role of Microorganisms in Metal Transformation and Remediation." She is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Arizona. Dr. Sizhuang "Steve"

Yan Ph.D. '94 began a clinical fellowship in diagnostic microbiology at the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Md.

Dr. Russell Kaake Ph.D. '95 has enrolled in an M.B.A. program at the University of Washington, Seattle. He would like to do marketing in the field of biotechnology.

Roy Schwilke '95, Burley, is a published free-lance writer and works in the agricultural equipment business as a consultant. His wife, Brandi, is a high school biology teacher in Rupert.

Kristin (Ondler) Veneman '95, Des Moines, Iowa, is a third-year medical student. She plans to practice primary care in the rural Pacific Northwest. Kristin and her husband, Rob '96, have two sons.

Dr. Gregory Brown '96, Pocatello, has received the D.V.M. degree from Washington State University. He has joined a veterinary practice in Pocatello.

Dr. Steven Funk Ph.D. '96 has accepted a position with Eco Systems, North Bonneville, Wash. Later this year Steve will work in the Netherlands and Italy.

Lloyd B. Knight '96, Glenns Ferry, is feeder council coordinator and Environmental Enhancement Program project coordinator for the Idaho Cattle Association in Boise.

Todd E. Wells '96 graduated from the WSU School of Veterinary Medicine in May. He and wife Genaura (Lee) Wells '95 were married on July 19. Todd is working as a vet at West End Veterinary Clinic in Buhl. Genaura is a financial advisor at Farm Credit Services in Twin Falls.

Scott Callantine M.S. '97 is a sales representative for the Intermountain Scientific Corporation in Oregon, eastern Washington, and northern Idaho. He continues to be an active sky diver.

Matthew Quesnell '97 is close to completing his M.S. degree in the Department of Animal Science, Washington State University. He plans to return to the family dairy in Twin Falls.

Dustin Thomas '97 is a graduate student in computer science at the UI.

Cynthia Calene '98 has started her doctor of pharmacy degree at Washington State University. Last year she helped teach several MMBB lab sections at the UI.

Sara Craigmiles '98 is a first-year medical student at the Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Md. She married Eric Thompson shortly after graduation last year.

Rachel Himsl '98 is a scientific aide with Dr. Philip Berger, UI Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences.

Dr. Kellie Ploeger Ph.D. '99, Prospect, Conn., is an adjunct faculty member at Southeastern Connecticut State University. She and John Jegla have recently purchased a house. John works at Bayer Pharmaceuticals in New Haven.
