These
insects are up to 50 mm long with large head and
eyes, short antennae, and hind legs enlarged for
jumping. Color is variable from tan to black.
They feed on all above-ground plant parts of
several crops and can cause defoliation in heavy
infestations. They are most prevalent in farming
areas adjacent to rangeland or wasteland. Host
plants: potatoes, alfalfa, cereals, beans, mint,
peas, sugarbeets.
