  Doris Williams is a retired Professor and Extension Human Development Specialist at the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Idaho. She is on the editorial board of Adult Residential Care Journal and a consultant for the Agency for Children, Youth, and Families. She herself is a grandparent in Moscow, Idaho. “Their adult children were not responsible. Some of them were having alcohol problems. Some of them just were living the time for themselves. They didn’t want the responsibility and wanted to run away to do something else,” she said.

    “I think it’s a real heavy responsibility. As I started doing my research, I found in the case studies that there were some people who, in fact I do know a woman who had taken one grandchild. Then when it came time to take more, she just simply couldn’t do it. She had to say no. I thought that was heartbreaking but I think people have different points of stress. She didn’t have the money, she didn’t have the physical stamina and she had done that with one grandchild but she couldn’t take the others.”
