UI and WSU Bi-State Dairy

Additional opportunities

• Enhance advanced training options through post-baccalaureate and post-DVM
programs, and short courses for dairy workers and professionals
• Offer new distance education and outreach technologies
• Increase support for existing joint programs, such as the Center
for Reproductive Biology and the Cancer Prevention and Research Center

Why Now?

Urban and environmental issues currently threaten the viability of both university dairies. Further, the current dairies cannot support the contemporary needs of the consumers and producers they serve. The proposed Bi-State Dairy will meet the current and future needs of researchers, students, dairy producers, animal practitioners, and consumers in Idaho and Washington.

What Is Needed

The new Bi-State Dairy will require an estimated $15 million to choose a site, and build, stock and equip it as a teaching and research facility. The plan calls for a 1,000-cow dairy. The needed facilities will include a pavilion, classrooms, and teaching and research labs. Waste management facilities will be designed for flexibility to develop future nutrient management technologies. The dairy will include an office, record and data center, student gathering area, outreach center, and housing for managers and student interns.
